Deep Dark Home

It is when the house rests in darkness,
with street lights peeping in
that one remembers their being,
soul, senses, and skin.

As if the shadows were the porchside rain
washing the long way down
the deep inner workings
with a sweet twinkling sound.

And the slender gentle sidewalk lamps
curl all to surround
the little house’s doorway
to see if you’re around.

They come as friends, the dark and light,
to wake you from your crib
to wake you from your drowsy days
on this cool summer’s night.
